Respect Equality Safety Empowerment and Transition (RESET) Support Service is a newly established, registered, not-for-profit organisation who work with male perpetrators of domestic and family violence (DFV). The objective of our service is to keep women, children and families safe by reducing the incidence of DFV and breaches of domestic violence orders (DVO). We completed a 10-week, Change Begins with Change pilot program; a voluntary, educational and reflective group support program focusing on emotional intelligence and effective management tools for emotional regulation. Our aim for the pilot was to understand if the program reduced DFV incidence and breaches of DVO’s. Clients were referred through the Queensland Police Service (QPS) vulnerable persons unit (VPU). All clients were invited to take part in the program except for individuals with multiple DVO’s, with multiple partners, or demonstrating extreme violent behaviours. We were referred 45 clients who had a total of 55 calls for service (police intervention of a DFV incident) prior to the program provided by the RESET Support Service. Twenty-two clients (49%) accepted and completed the program (100% attendance). Two years post-completion, there have been no repeat DFV incidences or breaches of current DVO’s in the clients who completed the program. Surprisingly, three calls asking for police assistance were made by the clientele who had completed the program, suggesting an improvement in emotional intelligence, regulation and positive execution of appropriate tools and management strategies for escalation. Those who declined the program (51%) were 18 times more likely to repeat DFV incidences and/or breach current DVO’s (54 calls for service). Thus, the Change Begins with Change program provided by the RESET Support Service, not only reduced time, cost and resources for the QPS but provides a safer and more optimistic future for the vulnerable members of our community: women and children.
